  PYXIDA,
Drug Abuse Prevention and Health Promotion Centre, is a service
of psycho-social support, which develops and implements activities
for the prevention of drug abuse and for the promotion of health
in the local community. PYXIDA belongs to the National Network
of Prevention Centres, which includes bodies that are created
as a result of local action and, are supported scientifically
and financially by the Organisation Against Drugs O.KA.NA.
Any citizen, adult or under age, can contact
PYXIDA in order to:
 get
information in relation to the nature of addictive
substances and the consequences of their abuse
to be able to recognize and face the causes that are
related to drug abuse
support
his or her educational role as a teacher or as a parent.
develop
health programs in schools for the prevention of psychoactive
substance use abuse of addictive substances.
participate
in creative workshops and to find out how to use better
his or her own free time.
get involved
actively in the struggle of prevention as a prevention
volunteer.
ask for help related to addictive substances abuse,
in relation to himself or to herself, as well as in relation
to his or her family and friends.
 Regions
of involvement
PYXIDA is based in the Municipality of Sykies and meets the
needs of 21 Municipalities, as well as the needs of all the
bodies that make up this none profit organization.
The Municipalities: Sykies, Triandria, Agios
Pavlos, Neapoli, Polihni, Hortiati, Mygdonia, Lagadas, Sohos,
Agios Georgios, Apollonia, Arethousa, Assiros, Vertiskos, Egnatia,
Kallindies, Koroneia, Lahanas, Madytos, Redina and Pefka.
The members: The Thessaloniki’s Chamber of
Commerce, the Thessaloniki's Chamber of Arts and Crafts and
the Labour Centre of Thessaloniki.
Principles of Prevention
Prevention focuses at the "roots" of the problem.
It includes all those actions that are taking place before the
appearance of addiction and during the first contacts with the
use of substances. It confronts the factors and the conditions
that make a person susceptible and strengthens those that empower
and protect the person.
The advancement of health refers to those efforts that advance
attitudes and behaviors that strengthen the bodily and mental
health of citizens. PYXIDAS' programs provide a wider support
in relation to the psychosocial health of children and teenagers.
The prevention programs
... treat drug addiction as a complex, multiple factored psycho-social
problem
... are aimed directly to the children and young people themselves,
or to the adults that surround them (parents, teachers, others)
... differ according to the target group
... are planned for a long period of time
... refer to all the addictive substances (legal or illegal)
... encourage the active participation of all those involved
...are systematically delivered and involve activities that
address different target groups
... aim at an early intervention (as soon as possible) before
young people come into contact with addictive substances
The prevention programs
PYXIDA implements school and community prevention programmes
which aim to enhance protective factors concerning drug abuse
and reverse or reduce risk factors. Most of the activities of
PYXIDA are focused on primary prevention.
The main activities of PYXIDA are:
Organizing informative & education campaigns in order to
raise the awareness of the community, concerning drug prevention.
Training of teachers, parents, metal health professionals, "key
persons" in the community and politicians, in order to
transfer to them the methodology and the skills to enhance the
protective factors in the environment of children and adolescents.
Leisure time activities and festivals for children and adolescents.
Counselling for adults, children, and adolescents who are in
trouble in order to help them clarify their needs and assist
them to the appropriate therapy centre.
